As a childbirth doula, instructor and HypnoBirthing practitioner, I guide families on their journey towards the pregnancy, birth and beyond tailored to their needs.
I believe that all babies and mothers deserve the absolute best possible start in life. Birthing a child is one of a woman's most important and memorable events in her life, and it should be a positive, joyful experience rather than the traumatic event that is often retold or portrayed in the media. Women's bodies are designed to birth their baby naturally, and with the right information, tools, support and respect, birth can be safe, comfortable, easy and relaxed for both mother and baby.
The HypnoBirthing method is a philosophy as well as a technique, enabling families to realise the best parenting experiences that they can achieve.
My professional background is in research, I received a first class honours and PhD in molecular biology from ANU. We have 3 children. My first birth was a typical obstetrically-managed birth, and my son required time in the special care unit due to the drugs and forceps used during the labour.
With my second pregnancy, I decided that there must be a better way to birth and hired a doula. This time, as an informed and empowered birthing mother, I had a wonderful, ecstatic natural birth.
This was a life-changing event for me. I could see clearly the thin line between a bad and a good birthing and baby experience. I see how a poor birth can affect the family involved for the rest of their lives and how a good birth can be empowering for the mother, enthralling for the father, ideal for the baby and add to the family in so many ways.
Following the natural high of this birth, which lasted weeks, I changed careers and become a doula myself. My first doula role was for a friend in 2001, and although the birth was in a teaching hospital, the baby was born completely naturally and in the caul - very lucky!
I have since supported many more mothers including first-time mothers and mothers who have had VBACs (vaginal birth after caesarian), multiple babies, caesarians, breech, and births at hospital and at home.
I founded Four Trimesters in 2002 while living in Singapore. It has grown to become the leading HypnoBirthing Institute in Asia, supporting over 250 births and teaching antenatal classes to over 500 couples.
While living in Europe, I was an invited 'baby expert' on the "Richard and Judy Show", prime time live to 5 million viewers in the UK.
For my third child, I chose an unassisted homebirth, with only my husband and 2 children present, which for the family was an incredibly bonding, moving – and humorous - experience.
I consider it an honour to meet couples at this special time of their lives, to teach and support, and attend at their births and fourth trimester.

Every birth is a unique experience which can be powerful, positive and transformative. Most women experience pain in labour but, given encouraging physical and emotional support and an unimpeded physiological labour, they can cope. Good support during a woman’s birth makes the difference between pain and suffering and ensures that labour pain is a positive force in the birth of a baby.
Our emphasis is in supporting women to enable their labour to unfold naturally — and the vast majority of women have the capacity to give birth without intervention — but to accept medical intervention if it is warranted.
Having a baby and becoming a parent for the first time or adding a new baby to an existing family is a time of enormous change which can be challenging. Having the opportunity to think through issues, discuss options and make plans for this transition ahead of time can give you more confidence so that the changes are not only manageable but welcome.
We work together by providing back up support if necessary and if the woman chooses.
Ingrid is also a Lactation Consultant and can provide expert breastfeeding education and support to women and their partners as part of the doula service.

A positive pregnancy and empowering birth experience can have a positive effect on the way a mother feels about her child, how the child feels about himself and how this shapes a family's dynamics. I am an advocate of conscious parenting and believe that the way a child is cared for shapes his emotional development for life; I believe babies and children thrive when they live in an environment of love, nurture and confidence. An empowering pregnancy and birth experience helps parents to create this positive home environment.
Empowered for Birth has been built on the following beliefs about birth:
- womens' bodies instinctively know how and when to give birth
- birth usually unfolds in the way it is meant to when not interfered with
- women and their families should be supported in making their own informed choices about their care during pregnancy and birth
- birth is a life-changing experience that should always be viewed through the eyes of the mother and her family; she will always remember the birth of her child
- memories of birth are shaped by how a woman and her family are treated; by offering calm, constant and empowering care and support, birth can be a more joyous and safe experience for both mother and baby.
I have two children, whose births were supported by our beautiful doula and friend. I have a personal understanding of just how much a doula can do for a woman, her partner and her baby during pregnancy, birth and early parenthood. Having given birth recently, I understand the issues surrounding having a baby in Canberra, the options women currently have and some issues that may limit women's options.
I am currently in my second year of a Bachelor of Midwifery at Canberra Uni, so am gaining more and more insight into how medical staff are trained to view birth and the effects this may have on the experience of birth for women, their babies and families.

I strongly believe all women have the innate wisdom and strength to birth their babies beautifully, in exactly the right way for them, if they are given the space and support to do so.
I am passionate about helping women and their families embrace birth and parenting with confidence, wonder and joy for the miracle that it is!
Above all, I recognise the significance of birth as a physical, emotional and spiritual journey, and the importance of a positive experience for mother, baby, father and family.
I am an experienced doula and have supported a wide variety of births at home, hospital and birth centre, including natural birth, waterbirth, multiples, vaginal breech birth, caesarean birth, and vaginal birth after caesarean (VBAC & VBA2C).
My practice emphasises the building of a close and trusting rapport, giving evidence-based objective information, and helping women to trust that they have everything they need within them to birth their baby powerfully, safely and joyfully.

Hi - I am a Doula and Calmbirth practitioner in Canberra. I am passionate about supporting women and couples to use their own inner resources to birth with calm and joy. What a wonderful way to enter the world - with love, calm and without fear!
I absolutely trust a woman's body to birth the way that is exactly right for her. I believe that birth is a very normal and also very simple process that, with proper nurturing and support, can be most enjoyable and satisfying.
As a Doula I am there to provide information, practical skills, and support and nurturing during pregnancy. I offer one on one support during labour and believe strongly in the benefits of a supported and undisturbed birth.
I absolutely love meeting new parents, forming trust and rapport over pregnancy, and being witness to the empowerment and joy that a baby can bring into your life.

My love for all things related to childbirth started when a friend invited me to her first birth in 2000...from then I was hooked. My love grew stronger through my own four pregnancies and births, and I was again invited along to my friend's third birth. I am passionate about helping women achieve what they feel is ideal for them when it comes to their perfect birth, without getting hung up on how things "should" be done. I love helping a mother-to-be or expecting couple learn all they can about the birthing process. I am also honoured when a mum or couple allow me to record the first moments of their new baby's life by taking photos.

From the birth of my own children in the last century to those of my grandchildren in this, I have witnessed many empowering births. It is this empowerment of women, and the perfect start in life for babies, that drew me to supporting them through that most important event in their lives.
I have many years experience and have supported natural, home, cesarian, VBAC, multiple, Lotus, breech and water births and am committed to providing a high quality personal, caring and professional service to all my clients. My emphasis is on natural birth but my major role is to support a woman in whatever way she needs me. My services are tailor-made to increase the comfort and confidence of parents before during and after the birth of their baby.
I encourage parents to use evidence-based information to make informed choices surrounding the birth of their child. I demonstrate the birth process through film and models so women fully understand how their bodies work and how, by maintaining a stress free and fear free environment, a woman's body is able to produce its own natural resource of pain medication - endorphins.
I am always on call to answer any concerns or worries parents may have and my support throughout labour and birth is constant and not limited by time constraints.
I am trained in complimentary therapies and can confidently incorporate aromatherapy, reflexology, acupressure, homeopathy, guided meditation, flower essence therapy and Reiki into my work as a doula.
I am also a certified Happiest Baby educator and run private and group baby calming courses.
